Our national debt just crossed 38 Trillion dollars. No matter which party is in charge, that debt keeps growing and will sink all of us, Left, Right, and Center.

Here is short crisp op-ed written to encourage our state legislatures to step up and take charge. Through the Constitution’s Article V, they have the authority to save our republic from fiscal collapse.

2026 will be the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Let us resolve to celebrate it by making 2026 the year we fix the fiscal mess in Washington DC, once and for all, while we still have time.

Let us resolve to make 2026 the year our States officially meet in a Convention to Propose Amendments as authorized by our Constitution. Once only a distant possibility, this Convention of the States is now taking shape. Thirty-nine states, five more than required, have applied to the Congress to call the convention. Receipt of those 39 official applications has been acknowledged by the Clerk of The House of Representatives, and by at least one Chairman of a powerful House committee.

But a recalcitrant Congress and convention opponents have for years stonewalled States’ legitimate efforts to call the convention as the Constitution requires, a clear and compelling breach of Congress’ Constitutional, ministerial duty.

No longer willing to be denied, the States are finally moving to assert their Constitutional authority. Efforts are underway for one or more state attorneys general to sue in federal court seeking a declaratory judgment that the requirements to call a Convention of The States have been met and Congress must call it.

Additionally, a separate, compelling legal analysis concludes that the States are authorized to proceed with the convention anyway, having satisfied the requirement that at least 2/3 of them have applied, and the Congress has acknowledged receipt of their applications. States can proceed whether or not Congress finally comes around and does their duty to call it, and whether or not a federal court issues a declaratory judgment.

A steering committee of current and former state legislators is now being formed to manage the preliminary organizational steps until state delegates to the convention have been selected by the various participating state legislatures. A letter seeking volunteer legislator delegates has been sent to the ninety-nine senior-most leaders in every chamber of the various state legislatures.

Moreover, considerable work has already been accomplished to help advance the comprehensive federal government fiscal policy reform we desperately need, and it is ready for consideration by delegates to the convention. It is entitled the Bill of Financial Responsibilities® (BOFR) https://bofrusa.com, a package of five common-sense amendments to vastly improve the performance of our Congress in the crucial areas of spending, deficits, debt, taxation, Social Security, Medicare, proper and timely accounting and reporting, and regulation.

Finally, to make 2026, our 250th anniversary, a year our founders would be proud of, we need the support of the most important group of all, We The People. We must begin immediately a fully funded, national messaging campaign to thoroughly describe the problems we face, explain the solutions we must adopt, and build the broad, common-sense support of our citizens, relying, as we always have, on our collective wisdom as free people to do the right thing for our beloved country.

Happy New Year.
