Perhaps in this era where “The Left” likes to look at everyone not as individuals but as members of minority groups, be they blacks, Latinos, Native Americans, Jews, or illegal immigrants dubbed “Dreamers”, we should look back at something so simple and basic that Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in a 2007 majority opinion. “The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race,” Roberts said in deciding that two urban school systems could not take account of the race of students to get the racial diversity they desired. He added, “Simply because the school districts may seek a worthy goal does not mean they are free to discriminate on the basis of race to achieve it.” Just one year prior in a voting-rights case, Roberts wrote, “It’s a sordid business, this divvying us up by race.”
